The Lancaster Canal

Linking Preston to Kendal, the Lancaster Canal is one of the country’s few contour canals. Built along the natural lie of the land it offers 41 miles of lock free cruising – the longest lock-free stretch in the country. As the canal is naturally level, it also lends itself to gentle walking and cycling as well as canoeing and other outdoor pursuits.

Things to see and do

In addition to providing spectacular views of the Silverdale Coast, Forest of Bowland and Wyre countryside, the Lancaster Canal also features some of the most impressive canal architecture in the country. The Lune Aqueduct, which is currently is benefitting from a £2.25 million transformation, is one of John Rennie’s finest works and not to be missed.

There are many superb pubs and excellent restaurants to enjoy along the 41 miles from The Last Orders Inn at Ashton-on-Ribble in the south right up to The Longlands Hotel past Carnforth in the north.

Check our Events and Locations pages to help you decide where to explore on your break.

What our customers say about us

Last year we had a lovely week on Daisy so we came back this year to check out Sylvia’s new boat, Poppy and she’s brilliant ! Brand new and luxuriously fitted out by someone who obviously knows about canal boats and cares about giving her guests a truly enjoyable holiday. Poppy has everything you could need and more -even two televisions!! One extra thing we did do this year was moor up overnight in Lancaster then next day caught a train to Windermere then it was a ten minute bus ride to Bowness for a boat trip on Lake Windermere. Excellent- Canal and Lake District boating in one holiday!! PS Sylvia is lovely too!

We booked Poppy for 4 days and had an amazing time. Poppy was such a lovely boat to handle and call home for the time we were on board. There were all the home comforts you would need to make it a great comfortable break. Only the weather would have made it absolute perfection, but you can never guarantee that in this country wherever/whenever you go. That being said we still had 3 out of 4 great days and used the one wet day exploring Garstang, and a nice little village it was too, followed by a great meal in the owd tithe barn pub sitting by the log fire, perfect end to a so so sort of day. Can’t praise the boat, the experience and Sylvia, who owns Poppy, enough so will have to stop here otherwise she will get fully booked and not be available for when we want to book her again! 5* out of 5* all the way!!

This was my first time on the canals of Britain. A fantastic leisurely time aboard Daisy our narrow boat for Four nights. After having a comprehensive overview of Daisy I felt confident to set off on our new adventure. Daisy is a compact little boat with everything you need to eat on board, a good sized fridge a cooker hob and oven and a grill. There are plenty of pubs on route so eating out is a great option too. We visited Garstang, Lancaster and Galgate before heading back to the lovely Marina where Daisy is moored. Daisy is a comfortable easy to manoeuvre size and even I enjoyed steering her through the very calm water of the Lancaster Canal where we enjoyed over 20 Miles of lock free sailing and I have got to say the best weather we could have hoped for.

I can’t thank Sylvia enough for accomodating us after my husband had to have an emergency operation at short notice and we had to postpone for a couple of weeks. Thank you and we will be back again. John & Tracy from Doncaster.
